Let’s Talk About Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is the mechanical exfoliation that lifts dead skin off the skin. The diamond crusted wands gently abrade the skin while the vacuum lifts the dead skin away. The results are softer, smoother skin that permits your skin care products to be better absorbed for optimal efficacy! The smoother skin also will give you that flawless look when you apply your makeup!

Is microdermabrasion good for everyone?

Honestly, No. I will offer another option for exfoliation to:

  • cancer patients,

  • acne & rosacea clients,

  • clients with mature thin skin,

  • clients with those tiny red lines on cheeks & chin,

  • shingles,

  • fever blisters,

  • open wounds on the face/neck,

  • or anyone who had Botox/fillers within 2 weeks or our appointment.

For a cancer patient, I need to be mindful of the lymphatic system. I cannot disturb it or encourage lymphatic drainage. Acne is an infection and can be spread, causing more outbreaks. Rosacea is already inflamed skin and adding the diamonds and vacuum is to be avoided (as well as heat). Those tiny red lines on the face are blood vessels. Applying vacuum pressure to them can make them worse. Botox and fillers need time to settle in the skin. Disturbing the injectable can cause them to stray form the area leading to unwanted results.

This little pad catches the debris from your microdermabrasion. Proof that your skin has been thoroughly resurfaced and skin buildup and debris has been effectively removed.

Are there any restrictions after a microdermabrasion?

You can pretty much resume your life after a treatment. You can apply makeup immediately. But the following should be avoided for a 3-4 days: Hot Yoga, excessive heat from a hair dryer and any exercising that will make you sweat. Application of any skin care products that contain acids or Retin-A. No facial waxing. Sunscreen is crucial and also avoid tanning or sun exposure for a few days.

WHY these restrictions?

Microdermabrasion removes several layers of your epidermis. These layers do regenerate in 10-14 days. In the meantime, protecting your skin from sun, sweat and certain chemicals is a precautionary measure I cannot emphasize enough.

Let me share a personal experience.

When I was an Esthetician student we were told no exercising after a microderm. I asked why not? I was simply told don’t do it. Well, that didn’t seem like a good enough reason, so naturally I did. I had a microderm at noon and went to the gym at 6.

Twenty minutes into my cardio, my face started to itch. At 30 minutes it was close to feeling like it was on fire!! Splashing cold water did not help! You see, the outer epidermal layers protect our skin from our own sweat (I cannot imagine what Retinol would have felt like!! And trust me I am not going to find out!!) Propionic acid is found in our sweat. And this can cause irritation, dryness, flakiness, and burning. Yep, it did!

Having this discussion with my exercise ladies, they opted to schedule their microderms after their workouts.

How often should I have a microdermabrasion?

Ideally, monthly for the rest of your life. Visiting your Esthetician (Me!) should be a monthly routine if you wish to enjoy healthy, glowing skin at every age and stage of your life’s journey. As we age, the dead skin cells that would naturally fall off daily, don’t. They cling and hang on for dear life! In time, the layers build up and become thicker. This makes our skin look dull and lifeless. In other words, that youthful glow is gone. Lines and wrinkles deepen and skin care products just don’t seem to be effective. Consistent exfoliation appointments are the key. At the very minimum, I would suggest an appointment at the change of every season.

And microdermabrasion isn't just for the face! How about fighting those dry flaky legs in winter? Or hard calloused knees or elbows? There are several ways to exfoliate the skin with microdermabrasion. And I have wands for each of them!

Is microdermabrasion for me?

For 97% of the general population I would say YES!! Experiencing a microdermabrasion is something everyone should try at least once!

You can each out to me at any time and ask me any questions you have about midrodermabrasion.
